Avalon High: Book Review

The book Avalon High, written by Meg Cabot talks about a girl name Ellie moved just outside of Washington D.C because her parents took a whole year off their jobs as professors to do research about a Camelot. While she was Maryland she attend the high school called Avalon High (AHS) as a junior, she met new people, like Will Wagner. Will Wagner is the Senior class president, football quarterback, and the well know, a.k.a. popular guy. They first met at the park, and from there on it was history. Ellie and Will became close friends, they started to hang around more often Ellie started to feel certain feelings for Will, but he has a girlfriend named Jennifer or Jen. Jen, the cheerleader, cheated on Will with Lance, and sadly Will was not yet aware of this at the time. The irony in this was that Lance was Will’s best friend. What makes the matters worse is Marco was the one who told Will about the affair. Marco is Will’s step brother who is a load of trouble. And that leads into the teen drama at Avalon High School.

The Meg Cabot is the author of various books, and one of the books is Avalon High. Her writing skills very simple. She writes as if the reader was reading the character’s mind. Meg Cabot does use dialogue, but when Ellie (the main character) is talking to herself she uses first person. The book is mainly written in to the main character’s perspective. For example, I can imagine how the character is feeling emotionally, physically, and what she is seeing. One example is when Ellie said, “ [...] “I found myself dining with A. William Wagner once again. How I made him laugh over the plate of steaming hot crab dip we shared at Riodans’s downtown [...] How i almost made him choke on his Moose Tracks ice cream at Storms Brothers while i told him the story of the time i stuck the red hot up my nose when i was four ,just to hear him laugh laugh again [...],” (Cabot 169). When i read this area of the paragraph from Avalon High I could imagine that Will and Ellie is having a great time together, and Ellie is trying her best to make Will forget about the incident that happened while sailing. Meg Cabot did a good job at being very descriptive about the character’s thought, feeling, and sight, because i felt that i was in the same room where the characters were at. I believe that Cabot did a great job at her writing skills because made the reader feel what is the character’s feeling. When i read the quote above i felt that i was in the same setting of Will and Ellie and able to see and feel what Ellie did when she was with Will that night. Meg Cabot did a very good job a being very descriptive when it comes to her books. Another example, is when Cabot was being descriptive on Ellie’s emotion. Ellie said, “It was the first flower an body had ever give me. Which was why, even after he dropped me off at home and drove away, it was hours before my heart started to beat anything like normally again,” (Cabot 77).I could really feel how Ellie felt when Will gave her the flower, It is just another way Meg Cabot showed her writing skills of being descriptive.

Avalon High is made for teenagers that are in to teen romance, and they are probably attracted to this book mainly because they could relate to the characters. For example, the girl Ellie has a major crush on Will Wagner that turns out to be the most funniest, cute, and popular guy in the school; there are most likely a lot of teenagers that have crushes on guys/ girls whom they can’t get their hands on either. Ellie said, “ I didn’t mention my crush on Will [...] Will and I were just friends (which, in case, anyways, was actually true),”(Cabot 95). Ellie keeps on repeating to herself that Will and her are just friends, but truly, she has a crush on him. She avoids the idea that she has feeling for Will because she does not want to expect that she could become Will’s girlfriend. This could relate to teenagers everywhere that has crushes on someone, but later deny to themselves that they a have crush on that person because they do not want to expect that there will be a relationship. This book is for everyone that is in to teen romance and teen drama.

In conclusion, Avalon High is good book by its great detail and great writing skills of the author. The book was mainly about teen life as the recreation of King Aurthur and other renaissance characters. It was an experience of teen love and evil lurking in the shadows of Avalon High. I can truly say i would recommend this book to someone or a friend that is interested in romance, action, and a little part of history from the Renaissance Era. Avalon High was very interesting, it talked about how a girl moved to Maryland and started to notice that she is falling for a guy that was in a current relationship, while learning that the guy she is falling for in the reincarnation of King Arthur. This book will be perfect for anyone that is in to teen romance novel and loves to relate their life to the characters in the book. Avalon High was not only about teen romance, but there was evil around. one of the characters was evil and tried to kill (Arthur) Will Wagner. This book is filled with many actions and love, it is great book and fun read. You would feel what the character is feeling and thinking, so i would recommend this book to someone or a friend so they too would enjoy reading the book Avalon High.

Comments to Book Review.

Phoung:
you switched ideas, you first introduced her book then talked about the flaws of it. Only has one Contreat details. Show evidence from the book on paragraph four, so the reader would know what you are taking. about. You said you were confused because of the changing of the switching of events, and now on paragraph five you are talking about how it is less confusing. You are contradicting yourself. I like the way you found a flaw on the book about “[..] the author writes makes it confusing because the reader would then have to remind themselves that the character is switching from being awake in the coma to being awake in real life but no actually awake at the same time.”Good job on spotting the author’s weakness.
Shiyun:
There is not transition between paragraphs three and four, it went straight to your idea of the purpose of the book. “After finishing The Hunger Games, I thought that it was a very great book. It got very intense and exciting to read near the middle of the book. Its like you can not stop flipping the pages. This was really a great book, it taught me alot about how government runs when it takes control of the people. This book is intended to tell people about this kind of government system; warning the possibility that out government system might turn out this way.” this paragraph makes me want to read the book. Good job at telling how you felt while reading the book. The way you describe your book makes me want to read it too, good job at trying to convince the audience that the book is great for reading.
Wendy:
“There was something about the way Tablo wrote that made me and my cousin feel the need to continue turning the page when we read it. This might be because of the way he explained each situation or because the stories was like poetry in a more detailed form. It talked about solitude and pieces of youth, which left me with a bittersweet taste.” This is deep. It makes me feel i should read the book, and try to understand what the author is trying to say. Is the book only about sadness? You said that in the end it did not talk about Tablo’s life, but in the beginning it did, show evidence.
